Worming dogs and puppies

Puppies
A puppy needs to be wormed regularly to protect it from Roundworms. These are transmitted from the bitch via the placenta and milk so all puppies will have them and can be infected as soon as they are born. It is important to treat the mother at the same time as the puppies.

For Puppies we recommend worming every 2-3 weeks.  These treatments should be started at 2 weeks old and continued until the puppy is 3 months old. The dosing then reduces to once a month until the puppy is 6 months. At this point you can then worm using the adult recommendations.
Adult Dogs
Frequency of worming depends on the risk posed to humans by the dog having worms. An adult dog is at risk of getting both roundworms and tapeworms so a complete wormer should be used. If you answer yes to any of the following questions then you should continue worming every month

  • Are there any children coming into close contact with the dog?
  • Does the dog hunt, scavenge or have access to farm animals?
  • Is anyone in the house immuno-compromised due to illness?

If you can answer no to every question then there is a lower risk of infection and the dog can be wormed every 3 months.

If you have any questions then please phone your local branch to discuss the worming requirements of your animal. Contact details for our branches can be found on the left menu.
