Diet for dogs and cats with Kidney Disease (Nephritis)
Animals suffering from Kidney disease must be fed on a diet low in protein and phosphorus, but high in carbohydrate in order to minimise the waste products of protein in the blood stream. These waste products are normally filtered from the blood by the kidneys, when the kidneys are damaged waste products accumulate and poison the animal from within.
The best possible diet is Hills tinned or dry g/d or k/d or Waltham Low Protein/Phosphorous available ONLY from Veterinary Surgeons. This is a complete diet and requires no other food.
If the animal will not accept this diet the following foods can be fed instead or in addition:
- HIGH BIOLOGICAL VALUE PROTEINS Egg, chicken, rabbit or fish.
- PLENTY OF NON PROTEIN FOODS Butter, margarine, oils, honey, jam, sugar (non protein) Rice, bread, pasta (low protein)
